Motswana Researcher Dr Kagiso Loeto Receives Humboldt Research Fellowship

Dr Kagiso Loeto, a Motswana researcher in the field of solid-state physics and electronics, has been awarded a Humboldt Research Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The fellowship recognises and supports outstanding researchers with exceptional qualifications.

Through the fellowship, Dr. Loeto will lead a new research initiative to investigate fundamental phenomena limiting the internal quantum efficiency of deep-ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (DUV LEDs).

This work will harness Paul Drude Institute's recently installed time-resolved cathodoluminescence system to push the boundaries of the understanding of these critical devices. The study aims to directly image non-radiative point defects—major contributors to efficiency losses in DUV LEDs—using high-resolution cathodoluminescence imaging.

By visualising these defects, the research seeks to uncover their impact on device performance, paving the way for strategies to mitigate efficiency losses and enhance the functionality of DUV LEDs.

“This fellowship is an incredible opportunity to pursue cutting-edge research at PDI, providing the resources and environment to explore innovative approaches and contribute meaningful insights to the scientific community," said Dr Loeto. "Beyond the science, this award also acknowledges the potential impact of this work and allows me to grow both as a researcher and as part of a global community dedicated to advancing knowledge and technology."

Hailing from Serowe, Dr Loeto is an alumnus of Mater Spei College in Francistown and currently resides in Berlin, Germany. He completed his PhD at the University of Cambridge in late 2023.
