The Bank of Botswana's digitalisation process will be completed by December. The process will allow the apex bank to digitalise its banking services to collect government revenue directly connected to its systems.
Speaking at a press briefing on 7 November, Bank of Botswana governor Cornelius Dekop said the digitalisation will provide efficiency by re-engineering the Bank and the Office of Accountant General processes, through interface, automation and ease of access to modern payment platforms.
The targeted end result is the elimination of reconciliation problems between the remittance accounts and the Government Accounting and Budgeting System and the direct transfer of payments to the Remittance account.
"The system will allow the end-to-end collection of revenue such that every payment to government will automatically reflect at the Bank of Botswana's bank and this will greatly improve the efficiency of revenue collection," Dekop said.
Dekop emphasised that efficient revenue collection will help keep the government's books up to date, minimise revenue leakages and ensure that government can pay back its debt liabilities through internally sourced revenues.
