For $200, South African Uber users can request a three-hour game drive at the Aquila Private Game Reserve in Cape Town.
The product is part of Uber’s “Go Anywhere” limited edition products which are also being trialled in Paris, Cappadocia and Mykonos.
The trip includes a pickup in Cape Town in an Uber Safari-branded vehicle on Fridays and Saturdays, running until January 2025. Each trip will accommodate up to four guests.
"We’ve designed our ‘Go Anywhere’ series to help our customers book bucket list adventures with the Uber convenience they know and love,” said Frans Hiemstra, Regional General Manager of Uber in the Middle East and Africa.
Uber’s popularity in South Africa has been waning since the ride-hailing service launched in 2016. Competition from other ride-hailing apps, concerns about rider and driver safety, clashes with meter taxi operators as well as driver issues about compensation has hit the image of Uber. Through offerings like Uber Safari, the platform is hailing diversity its offering away from the metro-based consumer segment.
"We’ve designed our ‘Go Anywhere’ series to help our customers book bucket list adventures with the Uber convenience they know and love,” said Frans Hiemstra, Regional General Manager of Uber in the Middle East and Africa.
By introducing a safari product, Uber will also be looking to tap into South Africa’s lucrative safari transportation industry, which is valued at over $10 billion.
