Botswana's financial markets rank sixth in Africa in terms of accessibility, transparency and openness, according to the Absa Africa Financial Markets Index. Botswana moved one position up from 7th last year in the study which featured 29 countries.
The Absa Africa Financial Markets Index, which has been running for 8 years, evaluates countries’ financial development based on measures of market accessibility, openness and transparency. The aim is to provide the investment community with a benchmark of market infrastructure across the continent while enabling policy-makers to learn from developments throughout Africa.

Of the six pillars, Botswana ranked first in macroeconomic environment and policy, fifth in market depth and access to foreign exchange, tenth in market transparency, tax and regulatory environment, fifth in pension fund development, and 22nd in legal standards and enforceability.
