Qatar Airways has acquired a 25% stake in South African airline Airlink for an undisclosed amount. Airlink has a network of more than 60 routes to over 45 destinations in Southern Africa including Botswana. The deal is pending regulatory approval.
According to Qatar Airways, the stake will allow Qatar Airways to bolster its Africa growth strategy, while Airlink will be able to increase its capacity and expand its marketing reach.
Qatar Airways already has a partnership with Moroccan national carrier, Royal Air Maroc, and is in advanced talks to buy a 49% stake in RwandAir.
Earlier this month, Airlink announced that it will expand its network with direct flights between Cape Town and Gaborone starting 1 April 2025. The flights will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
