BTC Managing Director Departs

Anthony Masunga, the managing director of Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC), is departing his role effective today, 2 August. Masunga has been in the role since January 2017.

"Under his leadership, BTC has seen accelerated investment in technology resulting in expanded service offerings in the market, thus strengthening BTC’s position in the telecommunications industry within Botswana," BTC told shareholders.

Boitumelo Paya, Chief Financial Officer, will assume the responsibilities of the Managing Director in an acting capacity with immediate effect. The Board of Directors will in due course appoint a substantive Managing Director.

Despite registering a P158 million profit per the latest financial results, BTC has struggled with top-line growth over the years, with revenue growth usually in the single digits per its financial results.

Under Masunga's leadership, the company also had to contend with numerous brand issues, including the public legal battle with organisers of the Born n Raised music festival and restructurings that saw hundreds of employees lose their jobs.

In what perhaps was his last move at the helm, Masunga had set BTC on a path to international expansion to boost revenue growth as well as digitalisation to position the company as a leading digital services provider in Botswana.
