After 14 years with the company that owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, Meta's Chief Operations Officer (COO) and second-in-command to CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Sheryl Sandberg, is resigning.
In a statement posted to her Facebook page, Sandberg stated that she was unsure what the future held after Meta but would focus more on her foundation and philanthropic work.
Sandberg joined Facebook in 2008, helping to build the then 4-year old startup's advertising business that now contributes to 98% of the company's annual global revenue and has had scandals surrounding privacy concerns regarding the collection of user data for advertising purposes.
In response to her resignation, Zuckerberg credited Sandberg with building Meta's ads business, hiring great people, forging the company's management culture, and teaching him how to run a company.
Sandberg will continue serving on Meta's board of directors.
